Review: Air - TV Show & Movie (2005)

Air, a TV series and movie adaptation of the popular Japanese game, is a story about one man's journey (Yukito Kunisaki) to find the girl with wings who flies in the sky. His mother told him this childhood story: A thousand years ago in medieval Japan, a winged maiden was held prisoner in a castle to never love or lest she dies. A samurai guard and telekinetic attempt to rescue and take her to her mother, but the Buddhist monks discover them. Her curse was constant reincarnation and death whenever she experienced love after her 15th birthday.

In the middle of the summer, Yukito settles in a small seaside town to make some money. There, he meets a cheerful and clumsy girl (Mizusu Kamio). She quickly makes him her friend and invites him to stay at her place with her mother. Yukito decides to stay in the town to search for the girl with wings. He also meets other girls around Misuzu's age. Yukito will unexpectedly discover that one of these girls possesses the soul of the reincarnated winged maiden. She will relive the painful agony this woman experienced a thousand years ago. Yukito will attempt to save one of the girls and break the curse.

I highly recommend the movie over the TV series for beginners and serious fans. The movie narrates the story and background at a better pace. It also explores and answers questions the TV series fails to explain because of lack of time. The movie version also removes the secondary characters and intensifies Yukito's character. Nevertheless, the TV series has good character development and superb imagery. The OP and ED songs are also excellent! In 2006, Air (TV) was ranked #36 on a list of Japan's Favorite TV Anime! It's a really good show.

I recommend Gendou or Nipponsei to download Japanese anime music. Air the Movie
is available to rent on DVD.
